i STILL hate Christmas.

It is that time of the year when Atheists around the world prepare to not welcome the cold, commercialized, false cheeriness, horrible hugs, wishes and fake smiles that mask the underlying social-political back stabbing–also known as Christmas.

It has been an year since I blogged “Why I Hate Christmas” last winter. W.I.H.C, was initially blogged in my Yahoo! 360 blog. But Yahoo! is pulling (or as they call it, “a transition”) from the community beta project and hence, my blog might be lost. I have moved it to this site’s archives.

Read the previous entry for WHY *I* HATE CHRISTMAS. The previous one was all about venting atheist frustrations but Its a pretty funny rant, I might add. Its a great read for me because I never knew my younger self had such a weird way of expressing things. Maybe it has only been a year, but I’ve traveled a great distance, met a lot of people, came back to India from Bahrain, burned a lot of petrol, rubber and money, learned another language, graduated, joined college, survived a couple of ditches and crossed countless obstacles within this time that I feel at least ten years older. Anyway, lets get back to this weeks’ hate blog.

Today, my hate for christmas is nothing related to my lack of belief.

I traveled so much and once when I pause after a long time and take a look around, I see the same tiny lights, wreaths, santa heads, ridiculous stars hanging around and decorations all over the place. Thats when you just want to scream out loud, “WILL THIS MADNESS EVER END?!!”

Jesus (if he existed or still exists), the chief spokesman for Christianity and poster boy for integrity, must be really pissed to see what christians have turned his birthday into! (Er, so is the birthday of Oden, Athena, Krishna and all, but what ever! lets stick to Xtians who stole the season’s popularity from Pagans.)

Christmas has become the antithesis of itself. It is supposed to be an attitude from the heart of sharing, reflection, and spending time with the ones you love. For those who believe in Christianity it is supposed to be a quiet remembrance of the Biblical Christmas story. (ya right! thats rich!)

Instead, everybody rushes around going through the motions out of a sense of duty. They want to appear as though they have the Christmas spirit but instead are just mindlessly complying with all the demands and obligations that bombard us from every direction. They use up an unbelievable amount of time and money on Christmas stuff.

While we’re on the subject, I really hate people who love Christmas and go all out. I hate how they look at me funny when I say I don’t like the holiday and I don’t celebrate it. I hate it when they say, “You are weird”. I hate how they reminisce about their childhoods like they were made just perfect by whatever shitty toy ended up under the tree when they were six. I hate watching a bunch of greedy, snot-nosed brats go into a psychotic rage over the sheer magnitude of Stuff that their parents throw at them is supposed to make me feel “joyous” and “warm” and “nostalgic” Urgh!

I hate how everyone remembers poor people and homeless people for two weeks and then promptly forgets about them again.

I hate how the Christian right won’t shut up about Christmas; how they’ve made the holiday into their own political agenda that they shove in my face every chance they get.

I wont read news papers for a month! (not that I’m regular reader) I hate how the news articles in every goddamn paper are always the same! Buy this, Buy that! be a good person if you do this… oh shut up!! isn’t it obvious? they want YOUR MONEY, YOU IDIOTS! — they don’t even give a damn if Mary got ******* by god himself.

I hate Atheists who say christmas is not about God, but about the Festive mood and presents. Well, **** you! spineless cowards, speak up for once in your lifetime against the biggest hoax ever in human history. (Not all atheists tho.)

I hate myself for wasting 3 hours of sleep to write this rant, again! and for the fact that I will do so again for all the years to come..

Have a GodLess Season Everyone. & Here is a John Lennon video for christmas.

Ruben is really bored. So you can email him by clicking here. He usually gets back in 3 minutes or it could take up to 3 weeks depending on how addicted he is, to stumbleupon.  Been a little busy for a while, so I'm averaging about a blog every 2 moon cycles. If you are lucky, you'll get to see a new blog entry and know what I'm upto. And when you are here, just let me know by leaving a comment.

Different and an impressive prospective about christmas from ur side when ppl are cheerful with the christmas spirit in the air. Can’t say I agree completely with you..But ur believes are ur own.
I had to nod my head with u with this one..’I hate how everyone remembers poor people and homeless people for two weeks and then promptly forgets about them again.”That is so true and makes me infuriated.
Cheers!

people do spend ungodly amounts of money at christmas time. it’s so unreal. what pisses me off even more is that people are actually more rude this time of year than any other time.
holiday cheer? when i see it, i’ll believe it.

But see, that’s why it’s so fun to celebrate x-mas. It’s a borrowed holiday anyway. I’m a hardcore atheist and I LOVE the season, because to me it *is* a big joke. I have no obligation to celebrate x-mas beyond the fact I actually want to be nice to people (just an excuse to be extra nice :D). I want to spend time with friends and family. I *want* to celebrate. Just by celebrating as an atheist, I’m doing a few things. 1: I’m taking part in a jovial celebration and being nice to people, while I have no obligation to do so. Which I think bashes the entire “Atheist have no morals” thing. (along with… everything else, but well… you get the point) 2: Most people know, or at least have some idea of my atheiosity (new word), so if they ask why I celebrate, I can explain how x-mas is really a borrowed pagan holiday celebrating the rebirth of the sun. 3: I’m being nice to people… what’s wrong with that?

Yes, I know the religious bullshit that’s around it. Yes, I know the consumerist bullshit around it. Yes, I bloody well know the whole spiel. There was a time when December was about celebration, and so far no religion has been able to do it right without returning to default asshole after words. So here’s what I have to say about it: It’s *our* turn. It’s *my* turn. It’s *your* turn. We’ll show the world that atheists are NOT hopeless. That we aren’t nice cause some super being tells us to, we get/make/buy gifts because we bloody well want to. We decorate because we love beautiful things. We sing because we have music in our hearts.

Oh… and I forgot. Singing around a tree, waiting for Santa clause, etc etc… “Thou shalt not worship false idols.” Mwahahahahahahaha! That’s the funnest thing about the holiday… so… in the end I’m an evil bugger. Oooh well. >:]

I still like Christmas because it gives me one-day holiday, which i desperately crave for. Remember, I am from India, so it’s not that big as in Europe or US. Rest everything doesn’t really bother me and i don’t care. People are deluded and really the transformation to enlightenment is painstakingly slow.

Wow, you obviously had some bad experiences with Christmas as a child! To go a little psychoanalyst on you, you likely wouldn’t be so against it if you’d had the more pleasant Christmases that some have had.

Sure, there are some things about Christmas that annoy me: the commercialism, that bloody music, the stupid films, the month long obsession, the fact that it is a hijacked holiday, that it really has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity… But really, how you perceive Christmas is really determined by the people you spend it around. If you spend it around curmudgeons, people who dislike each other, or “greedy snot-nosed brats”, then sure, Christmas sucks more than any other time of year.

However, if you spend it surrounded by family who are all delighted by the time of year, who are still filled with a sense of wonder no matter how old they are (my family’s a bunch of big kids), who really love Christmas - not just the presents - then it can be one of the best days of the year. We laugh, play, and feel good about being generous with one another (and get stuffed on the best meal of the year! We don’t have Thanksgiving in Britain^^). Really, it’s all about attitude.

So, by all means, continue to rant on about the way that media and religion treats Christmas - I’m with you 100%. But please do not try to imply that those who genuinely enjoy Christmas have simply “bought into the hoax” just because you do not understand them.

I’m a weak atheist, but why on Earth should my lack of belief stop me from enjoying the season? It’s people like you who convince the majority that atheists are all angry and joyless.

I personally think Christmas is great. Family get togethers, presents and such; I dunno, I enjoy it. Unless, of course, someone starts going on about the true meaning of Christmas and gets it wrong by assuming it’s some religious holiday. But I just correct them and laugh in their face. No sweat!

I like christmas, but only because the whole family gets together and we get to talk to one another, and I get stuff. Other than that I get really annoyed because the traffic around shopping areas is ridiculous (there’s one right down my street) and you have to deal with all the christians who think this holiday is all about them.
