Indian Independence from Religion.

it_has_begun____by_dpac.jpg

Namaste Everyone!

I’m a proud Indian Atheist. Today, India is celebrating her 60th year of freedom. India was founded as a Secular nation. meaning, no religion is favored over another. BUT, this is not what we see everyday.

Some people say I’m not patriotic enough since I never had the luck to be born in my motherland. They are wrong. I’m as patriotic as any other Indian. Perhaps more. I want the tyranny, oppression, persecution and discrimination to end completely. I will voice myself until there is not a breath left it me for what is right. This is not the voice of rusted Indian traditions, but the voice of a new, young, and brave India. Those that live as true Indians, without following any set of theology or godly magic.

Independence day, for me, is also a time to remember great Atheists/Agnostics who faught for our countries freedom. Like Jawaharlal Nehru, Bhagat Singh, and many more... Year 2006-07 was one of the greatest years in Indian History, thanks to our last president, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalaam (A notable scientist and engineer), who made considerable amount of change in India’s growth. Loved by all, a true visionary and man of science (not an atheist though). He was replaced recently by Pratibha Patil (first woman ever to be selected as president). This is an important turning point in gender equality for my country. I have wanted a woman president for many years. I have always wanted woman to be treated just as equally (Lets not forget, we had female infanticides, sexual harassments, and many other violent acts towards girls, under the cover of religions, myths & rusted traditions for many years in India’s past).

While India is often perceived as a Hindu country, it is actually the largest secular democratic country in the world. Parts of India, such as the southwestern state of Kerala (My State), are as Christian as any part of Europe or the United States. Christianity in India is almost as old as Christianity itself. Islam, Christianity & Hinduism are the major religions with countless number of sub divisions and castes. With a huge population of 1,095,351,995, India is being diced into pieces by its own people in the name of religion, cast, and community.

I see religious fanatics blowing themselves up, and other people along with them, in trains, railway stations, courts, theaters, and every other public place screaming the name of their GODs. And it is only the name god that our brothers and sisters will ever hear, as you helplessly watch them burn into smithereens. And for what? Nothing. all these acts can be blamed on the heads of terrorists. They can all be called religious fanatics and extremists. BUT deep down, every single theist (let it be a hindu, muslim or anyother) has the same anger and hate towards people of different views. The only difference being that, they are not making bombs and tying them to their waists. We walk among these people every single day. You could be the next one to die.

Here is a Video I made while launching Young India Productions.

Population: 1,095,351,995 (mistake in the video is regretted)

People will always disagree, and cause riots. But 90% of it can be stopped once we put an end to conflicting religion & categorization. Atheists need to unite within my country, or even globally, to protect the world from annihilation. Therefore we must Speak OUT. Indians, take a very good look at India, This could be our last.

Vande Matharam! Happy Independence day everybody.

-Ruben!

Ru,

I think India is such a great country because of the power of its mix of secular institutions and great spiritual heritage. As a free-thinker myself (I’m something of a pantheist, I believe in a universal creative force within each one of us) I would encourage a world in which either a religious viewpoint or not was equally respected. It’s just as bad to lambast people for their religious beliefs as it is for religious zealots to lambast those who do not have beliefs.

One reason I no longer call myself an Atheist, but rather a free-thinker. I believe we all have the right to explore our own belief - or lack of it - for ourselves. I know as a libertarian, this is what you believe as well.

Great site, by the way. Hope you’re well, man.

Ruben,

I applaud you for being so brave and bold to put your feelings and thoughts out there the way you do.

I know you know I am a Christian, but I’m stating that for the record for anyone else who may be reading this because it’s fair that folks understand that I am a woman of faith and it’s through that lens that I speak.

I do see where you are coming from in this entry and I would be the first to agree with you that these acts are horrific to the say the least.

In most of these cases, I do believe these acts occur more in the name of *religion* than they do in the name of the “god(s)” that these individuals are suppose to worship and are attempting (*attempt* being the key word) to represent. They almost worship their religion more than the “god(s)” of their religion, and that is a sad state indeed.

If I understand Nigel above, I would have to agree with his stance a bit more: “I believe we all have the right to explore our own belief - or lack of it - for ourselves”.

Unfortunately, Atheism isn’t the answer to solving tragedies like these, as there are just too many folks in the world like me who believe in a higher being.

There isn’t much anyone could say to me that would compel me not to believe in the God of the Bible. He’s proven Himself to me and now *I just believe*. I do believe though that God gave us all a free will and each person must decide for themselves who it is they will serve. And let it be known that we all serve someone or thing whether it be Atheism, the Christian God, the FSM, or whatever… There is no exemption not even “atheism”…

Fortunately, religious fanatics tend to be a minority, but should the rest of us be judged by their actions? What happens if an atheist fanatic behaves in a similar manner as a form of protest against religion? Then what? Then we are back were we started…. hate crimes…riots…more pain…more tragedy.

What we need to rid the world of is hate *crimes* not religion….

Crimes = an unlawful violation…a violation of thier country, of their faith, of themselves and their fellow man, and in most of cases of their god(s).

Misguided individuals….sad….very sad indeed…

Excellent Video Ru!

It wasn’t until the very end i realized there should have been music and i didn’t get any!
Yes dumb me hadn’t realized my wonderful wife had turned off the speakers last night while i was at work!
So i watched it again and the music added to the atmosphere!

In the past you have referred to me as an agnostic Atheist, When i saw this i start to realize that you are close to the truth! Because at the end of the day we both want Peace, and i think we are close to the way to solve it all though people would still want to then fight for their right to defend what they believe!

I remember watching the series Highlander (and the movies) and on there they come out with the phrase
“In the end there can be only one” Yes maybe if we all believed in the same version of events then we could all be happy and not fight over Religion, In reality though even if someone came up with Real undeniable Proof, all other religions would rise up against them and try to undermine the truth!

In the end if there were no religions but we were taught morality and the laws backed up the Morals then maybe we could walk forward together! I have often said of you, “Ruben is my friend, Not believing doesn’t make him evil, It just means one of us knows the truth and the other is being fooled, Though who am I to say my belief is right or wrong, No one ever showed me any proof!

Me…… Well I like to believe there is a God, I like to believe there is one God and that we all believe in the same God but we know him by many different names! The stories differ from religion to religion, and that is where the problems started!

If we all spoke the same language it would be a good start because a lot of the original stories have been lost in translation and through inaccurate interpretation!

It (in my opinion) is those inaccuracies that cause these wars nowadays! We can not change the past, But we sure as heck can change the future!

Stop fighting in the name of God, whether he existed or not! stop spilling Blood in the name of God, Do you really think by doing this you are doing your God a favour! If God is as powerful as people say, Wouldn’t he himself/herself strike down those who he thinks deserve to die!

Who are we to judge?

wow, the message in ur video is really great. however i disagree that religion=pain. people who justify their heinous crimes through God r totally deluded…killing people doesn’t do ANYTHING for their cause, which is just trying to prove that their beliefs r better.
religions r just human perspectives grouped together. however, if you can get something out of ur “religion” aka BELIEFS/THOUGHTS to be a better human being, how can it be pain?
I think ur overgeneralizing “GOD” b/c of the horrible people who justify their actions through God. God doesn’t CAUSE us to do anything…we’re just here & its up to us to make the best of it. & how does Amma tear people apart?? her whole message is bringing people together! she doesn’t care about your religion.
I hope your Young India Movement takes root and actually changes people’s minds.
