Awesome God & Atheist Morals

I’ve waited for ever to write about this. This inspirational youthful song just makes me want to believe in God. To have an Awesome God on my side would truly be, Awesome. Everyone, please take 4 minutes & 55 seconds to watch this video. Its The Awesome God & its one of the few videos that I play everyday on my IPod.

Like I promised in my previous post, I’ll talk about Atheist Morals. I was curious when I asked my Christian friend, “What does it feel like to believe in God?” Her response was a simple, “safe.” . I’d love to have that awesome feeling for the rest of my life, but I simply chose not to live in a delusion. I hope you have watched the video, lets continue..

According to the above video, God’s qualities are

  1. powerful
  2. righteous
  3. peaceful
  4. compassion
  5. being a source of truth (described as “light”)
  6. strict but also merciful
  7. holy, awesome, and powerful
  8. Loving

I’d like to quote something from the bible,

Quote“So God created humans in his image. In the image of God he created them. He created them male and female” - Genesis 1:27 (From GWT, whatever that is)

I had yet another discussion with a bunch of Christians (Been having it a lot lately & I was the only Atheist facing 10 or more Christians) & I asked them the all so familiar question “If God made man in His image, does He have Vestigial Organs?

I got my response from a Theist and now I know that,

QuoteGod is a spirit being possessing intellect, emotion and will. He created man with those same qualities. He thinks, he feels and he acts. So when you read that, it is talking about those qualities, not the fleshly qualities of man. The animal realm does not possess those qualities. You may refer to animals being ‘intelligent’ but it is not the same as man’s intellect; nor do animals have the emotional make up of man or the ‘will’ of man. Animals are instinctive.

- Grasshopper

I have to admit, this is one of the best explanations of Genesis 1:27 I have ever heard from a Christian. Its not the LITERAL meaning that Theists believe in, its the true meaning of The Metaphors!!!

BUT he is wrong when he says, “nor do animals have the emotional make up of man or the ‘will’ of man. Animals are instinctive.” Almost every social animal on earth, has emotions. Take a look at the Animal kingdom, there is compassion and almost every other emotion in there (some emotions are different, some better, some worse by our definition of emotional makeup, how hormones affect the body & how we interpret our feelings of empathy in order to make a coherent system.) or even what you call compassion or “will”. Humans evolved the brain & emotion we have today from lesser brains. So, we are not that different, just a little improved in the path primates took. Those who wish, may watch this video on that, but I’ll just stick to my topic.

Here is a comic that comes to my mind on the thought of “Metaphors“….

God Metaphor
Funny, but true.

SO, This is what I collected by putting the pieces together…

  1. God’s qualities are the best moral education we can receive.
  2. Most of the words in DA BIBLE are mere METAPHORS.
  3. God made man in His/Her Qualities.
  4. God’s qualities (aka: morals) are what Man tries to achieve.

Now ask yourself! Are these Moral Qualities confined to a Theist? Is an Atheist destined to hell just for not believing in a theology thats almost entirely metaphors (starting from Genesis Chapter 1) ? Can’t an Atheist be Moral ? of course he can!

Atheism is not a worldview. It doesn’t carry any obligation to any kind of political or moral system. In that sense, it is amoral. Note that it is amoral, not immoral. Immorality is flouting the conventions of one’s own morality; amorality is being without morality.

An Atheist can have any system of morality he or she wishes.

Why should an Atheist be moral, without a god to make him to do so? You may as well ask why he should use his head for something besides a mobile hat rack. Morality is a built-in condition of humanity; the moral tendency exists in just about everyone, barring psychopaths.

1. Compassion. Atheists have the power to do what’s right for all humanity, rather than the forced perspective of doing what is right for a god. Mere absolutes like “thou shal not lie” obstruct many things.

2. Unclouded judgment. Atheists can experience healthy outrage at the outrageous without fear of questioning God’s plan. Atheists try to learn from disasters and not just chalk it up to God’s Plan. We use science to understand catastrophic events like hurricanes, and tsunamis. This gives us the ability to save lives. Yes, there is cause and effect, and our actions effect how we live, you should save for retirement, and if your diet is bad you’ll end up fat, or sick, or both. Suppose, Your loved one dies in a completely random car accident where nobody could possibly be blamed. Is it more comforting to know the accident happened because of bad luck or is better to think the accident could have been prevented by an omnipotent being that could have stepped in and saved them from an untimely death, but your god decided to just let them die? You don’t have to be frustrated thinking “Was it because I didn’t pray enough?” “Was God mad at me or them?” “Maybe I should have prayed more.” Atheist take comfort in knowing there is no plan.

3. Love & Friendship. Atheist can be friends with everyone without having the thought in the back of their mind that this person’s lifestyle may be evil. We have the power to accept people for what they are. Enabling us to enjoy their quirks rather than chastise them for being unique. Atheists can have relationships with people who have alternative lifestyles without feeling like they have to save them from some deity that is going to condemn them for being themselves. After all, if there was a creator, then he has made everyone the way they are. Atheists don’t fear that a large part of the earth’s population is going to hell for being true to themselves. We love our family & friends, just like YOU. Atheists even have less divorce rates! (who wants to give a figure and try and make me look stupid ?)

4. OpenMinded& Understanding. Atheists raise freethinking children; let them pick a religion, or none. What would you have picked? You can raise your children according to your values without feeling as though you have to defend Bible stories that even a child can see are fiction.

5. Truth. Most Atheists, my self included, are Atheist-Agnostics. We can neither prove or disprove god. This doesn’t mean that we will fill the void with a magical being. We simply say “we don’t know” and not fill the gap with lies that can’t be humanly proved to be right.

6. Mercy & Empathy. Then again, I hope you all remember The Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. This is a useful and essentially satisfying way to act. It relies on enlightened self-interest and the principle of empathy to get results. We help those in need, just like every other human whos’ heart is not stone cold, not to get a ticket to heaven. Human beings are society animals; we are tribal, fundamentally speaking, and it is this which forms the basis of human morality. Empathy is an inherently subjective emotion. We feel empathy to different degrees according to our relationships with people; mostly for our families or those with the closest emotional bonds to us, then to other members of the ‘tribe’, and finally to outsiders.

I’m Ruben & I’m an Atheist-Agnostic. & ………It feels great!

PS: your god isn’t awesome, considering christianity’s bloody past. but I love the song BTW.

@ Fruitloop, you are not yourself nowadays. Sup? I notice you posted here under the alias “I just believe” too. I wasn’t trying to disprove your god over there, I was talking about Atheism. So I really dont know about the odd choice for words..

Great Video! The comments from that and your blog made me think!
One thing i wanted to ask you Ruben and keep forgetting to ask is As an Atheist does that mean you don’t believe in the Devil either?

And i know i have always said I would like to see proof, scientific undeniable proof, But in the words of a great friend of mine (Melissa Sneider) she said to me
“You see the leaves move in the trees, You don’t see the wind that blows them, but you know what it is”

As Melissa was/is Christian I guess that’s maybe how it exolained everything to her!

You are right Markie,
I don’t worship Satan, Humans, Dragons, the Dead, or Aliens.

& you are once again right in thinking about wind and god. Religious belief is always blind faith. Faith is believing without seeing. But some of us, are not stupid enough to believe something just because it cant be disproved..

BTW My response to comment # 1 was satire.

I love the song too. I had heard the song at church and wanted to hear it again. Now I got my wish..
It was a great post about morals. I liked the 4 points you said in the middle. eventhough i don’t quite agree with the second one.
about the christianity’s past i think blame is on the people and not the god.

I was just having a rough day… I’m over it…

Yes, will probably use “I Just Believe” over there. I like that name.

I’m a fan of Rich Mullins and I love this song too. Like some of his other stuff better. It was unfortunate that he passed so unexpectantly. He was an incredibly gifted Christian song writer. He was like me. He believed what he believed. It’s what makes me what I am. (http://youtube.com/watch?v=aHWoDwxyKUE).

I wish I had more time to comment tonight. There are a couple things referenced as being almost “equal”, but I’m not sure that they are. I need to catch up on rest, but I will be back later.

Super clip, Ru! Thanx for sharing it with us ^o^
I already have that song for some years (surprise surprise :p) but never thought that there’s also the clip :p
You are ABSOLUTELY right.. Faith is believing without seeing.
You said, “But some of us, are not stupid enough to believe something just because it cant be disproved..” So I assume that u say that Christians are stupid, because they believe in “something” that can be proved. But that’s the whole point of FAITH, right? It is believing without seeing.
I really like what Markie quoted, “You see the leaves move in the trees, You don’t see the wind that blows them, but you know what it is”
It is a simple explanation about faith, but it’s straight to the point.

You said, “Atheists can experience healthy outrage at the outrageous without fear of questioning God’s plan.”
It’s true that Christians are not supposed to question God’s plans. We are supposed to accept everything what happen to us without ANY questions, and we are supposed to believe what happen to us, no matter how good/bad it is, it must be the best for God.
I know it’s hard to understand, -suppose- ur loved one died in a bad car crash. BUT, have u ever thought, that ur loved one might could have died in a WORSE way?? (example, suffers for years on cancers, AIDS, or whatsoever)
Dun u think “this-fast-dead” would be better for ur love one than to suffer for years?
U may question, why God let ur loved died? Why He didn’t save her/him?
Remember, we are not immortal. We all will die sooner or later. Juz a matter of time, and HOW we will die. But it doesn’t matter when or how, dead is dead, right? Who cares?? I know it sounds hard, but the world will keep turning, life will go on. And our faith help us to go on.

You said, “Atheists even have less divorce rates!”
Uh oh.. it’s so unfair to make a comparison.
Let me ask u a question, Are you sure that ALL Atheists have the morals that u mentioned above?? I dun think so.
It’s the same with Christians. I have to say, that not all Christians have the morals of being good Christians (yeah.. sad but so true)
Uc, human are weak. We are all the same. U juz CAN’T make stereotypes about Christians, Atheists, Buddist, Moslems or whatsoever because we are ALL the same. Some are good, some are bad. C’est la vie!

You said, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
So I guess we are not suppose to treat others bad, right? Cuz we also dun want to get bad treatments, right?
So it also means that we shouldn’t have bad thoughts/expressions about others.
We shouldn’t compare or even judge the others, because WE ARE ALL THE SAME.
“Think before u point ur finger at someone else. Because while u point ur ONE finger to the others, ur other FOUR fingers are pointed at u. None of us is better than the others. None of us has the right to do it”.

Hope u dun take any offenses, Ru. Juz a ’short’ comment :p

Love, ~D~

So I assume that u say that Christians are stupid, because they believe in “something” that can be proved.

Is that a typo? did you mean can’t ? it must be a “can’t” other wise your statement wont make sense.

if yes, then, click here, All adults with imaginary fiends are stupid.

Remember, we are not immortal. We all will die sooner or later. Juz a matter of time, and HOW we will die. But it doesn’t matter when or how, dead is dead, right? Who cares?? I know it sounds hard, but the world will keep turning, life will go on. And our faith help us to go on.

Faith helps weaker minds go on. Religion is a crutch for the weaker mind. Christians love the thought of heaven. But it takes real guts to question its existence and truly accept that we are, who we are - simple animals evolved on the face of the earth. not special people made by an omnipotent, omnibenevolent, omnipresent, contradicting being.

—————————————————–

Faith is believing without seeing. There is no real rhyme or reason, you just want to believe. you love the delusion and peace of a fake god and heaven. If there truly was a reason, or evidence, there would be no reason for “just believing”

Atheists are comfortable with the unknown. Instead of filling the gap with a magic theology or a Magical being, he simply says “I doesn’t know” and moves on with his life enjoying everything and knowing that there is no master plan. there by living to the fullest. not restricted by “mind police” - While you try to support your 2000 year old manuscript using metaphors and wordplay, we use something called science to understand the origin of the earth. A thousand years from today, Religion will be printed in the book of “worlds biggest blunders”

—————————————————–

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

So I guess we are not suppose to treat others bad, right? Cuz we also dun want to get bad treatments, right?

So it also means that we shouldn’t have bad thoughts/expressions about others.

We shouldn’t compare or even judge the others, because WE ARE ALL THE SAME.

No. not exactly. I manipulate people and their emotions to get what I need. I help people to get help back the way I like them to do. (so do christians) Here is a new twist, “do unto to others are you would like them to do to you”

—————————————————–

It’s the same with Christians. I have to say, that not all Christians have the morals of being good Christians (yeah.. sad but so true)

We shouldn’t compare or even judge the others, because WE ARE ALL THE SAME.

I’m not judging your entire community! Do you know why I blogged this post about Atheist Morals ?

BECAUSE

*Atheists are the least trusted minority.
*Atheists are called baby killers
*Atheists are called haters
*Atheists are called evil.
*Atheists are called vile.

“he who disbelieves god is evil, his actions are vile and he does no good” - bible
-but the bible is wrong.

I’ll tell you why I care. Because CHRISTIANS JUDGE ALL ATHEISTS TOO QUICKLY.

I want to change this. I want to be counted equal. I want to be trusted and treated like a human. not the work of an imaginary egoistic devil.

This has been a fascinating read Ru!
Did you ever see this… http://www.fullmoon.nu/articles/art.php?id=tal
I’m pretty sure you must have along the way somewhere ;)

Bits of what you’ve written here reminded me of an interview with Richard Dawkins I read in a British science journal called “Focus” ~

‘Many theologians claim one of the biggest benefits of religion is its ability to provide a moral framework from which to live by. Whether or not you believe in God, surely that’s no bad thing?
Dawkins’ reply ~ “Well, I hope no~one is suggesting we get moral guidance from the scriptures, as it would be pretty ghastly guidance ~ violence against women, posthumous torture, and so on. And those people who don’t steal or cheat solely out of fear of being found out by an imaginary policeman in the shape of God are not particularly moral people anyway. I like to think my friends and I are moral for better reasons than that”

Ain’t that the truth!

Markie,

you misunderstood my email. It wasn’t your friend who came along, it was someone else from a google search. the person had used your friends name to find this page through google (since her name is mentioned in the comment section). I was wondering who this friend is.
